Cycle storage for new builds

Cycle storage for new builds

Designed to comply with leading industry standards and frameworks

Compliance with BRE Home Quality Mark
The BRE Home Quality Mark (HQM) is a national standard demonstrating that new homes are well-designed, well-built, and cost-effective to run. It uses a five-star system plus scores for cost, well-being, and environmental footprint. Homes with HQM certification exceed minimum standards such as Building Regulations, helping developers differentiate their quality.

Providing sustainable transport options like cycle storage is a key way to earn HQM credits. It reduces congestion, lowers carbon emissions, and promotes healthier, active travel.

Earning Cycle Storage Credits
HQM awards 3–6 credits for cycle storage, depending on dwelling size and number of spaces:

3 credits:
Studios/1 bed: 1 space per 2 dwellings
2–3 beds: 1 space per dwelling
4+ beds: 2 spaces per dwelling

6 credits:
Studios/1 bed: 1 space per dwelling
2–3 beds: 2 spaces per dwelling
4+ beds: 4 spaces per dwelling

These credits improve the overall star rating and support HQM goals for cost savings, well-being, and environmental performance.

Secured By Design (SBD) is a UK police initiative that recognises developments designed to reduce crime. The SBD Homes 2025 Award is given to residential projects that meet security standards developed with specialist police advisers called Designing Out Crime Officers.

These officers work with architects, developers, and planners from design through to completion, ensuring developments are safer and more secure.

Award Application Process
The SBD award is assessed across three sections:
Section 1: Development Layout and Design
Section 2: Physical Security of the Home
Section 3: Additional Features

SBD Award Levels
Gold: Meets full requirements in Sections 1, 2a, and 3.

Silver: Two routes:
Meets Section 2a requirements only.
Or meets Sections 1, 2b, and 3 requirements.

Bronze: Meets Section 2b requirements.

How can Trimetals Help?

What is Building for a Healthy Life (BHL)?
Building for a Healthy Life (BHL) is England’s leading design framework for creating well-designed homes and neighbourhoods. Endorsed by the government and widely used by home builders and local authorities, it helps ensure new developments are attractive, functional, and well-integrated into their surroundings.

BHL supports goals to:
✅ Build more homes
✅ Improve design quality
✅ Encourage creative, collaborative planning
✅ Involve local communities in shaping development

It uses 12 simple questions as a design dialogue tool to guide and assess quality, covering topics such as connections, facilities, transport, character, safety, and sustainability.

BHL Rating Explained
Developments are assessed using a traffic light system:
Green: well considered and resolved
Amber: needs refinement
Red: requires major reconsideration

To earn Built for Life™ accreditation, a development must achieve at least 9 green ratings. Achieving all 12 qualifies for the ‘Outstanding’ quality mark.

Supporting Question 12: External Storage
Question 12 of BHL specifically asks:

“Is there adequate external storage space for bins and recycling as well as vehicles and cycles?”

Providing secure, dedicated cycle storage helps meet this requirement, supporting sustainable transport, reducing car use, and promoting healthier lifestyles.

Why choose Protect a Cycle?
The Trimetals Protect a Cycle is designed to meet BHL’s expectations for high-quality, secure external cycle storage.

✅ Certified to LPS 1175 Issue 8: Security Rating 1/A1
✅ Secured By Design approved, meeting police-endorsed security standards
✅ Rigorously tested to resist evolving theft methods
✅ Durable, weatherproof construction for long-lasting performance

Proven in practice:
Installed by Thames Valley Police to protect its own bicycles
Featured at RHS Hyde Hall Flower Show’s ‘Secured Garden’, presented by Designing Out Crime Officers

By specifying Protect a Cycle, developers can address BHL Question 12 requirements confidently—contributing to better ratings and delivering practical, secure cycle storage for residents.
