Code for Sustainable HomesPROTECT A CYCLE – SECURE BICYCLE STORAGE

A guide to obtaining credits for the Code for Sustainable Housing incentive.

What is the product and how can it gain credits on a Sustainable Housing Project?

The Protect a Cycle is a unique high security metal bicycle storage unit.

It is an ideal product to incorporate into a sustainable housing project as it is the only bicycle storage solution which has been tested and approved by both the Loss Prevention Certification Board and Secured By Design (Police Preferred Specification).

Credits are gained by the house builder for various features incorporated into the design, these include Energy and CO2 Emission limitations,  Water management, Building Materials used, Surface Water Run-off, Waste management, Pollution Control and Health and Wellbeing.

Cycle Storage is included under the Health and Wellbeing category; specifically “to encourage the wider use of bicycles as transport by providing adequate and secure cycle storage facilities, thus reducing the need for short car journeys”.

Therefore by implementing the Protect a Cycle within your project you can gain valuable credits.

What is the Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH)?

The Code for Sustainable Homes provides a comprehensive measure of the sustainability of new homes, ensuring that sustainable homes deliver real improvements in key areas such as carbon dioxide emissions and water use. The Government’s ambition for the Code is that it becomes the single national standard for the design and construction of sustainable homes, and that it drives improvements in home building practice.

What is a Sustainable Home Credit?

The Code assigns one or more performance requirements (assessment criteria) to all of the environmental issues. When each performance requirement is achieved, a credit is awarded (except the four mandatory requirements with no associated credits). The total number of credits available to a Category is the sum of credits available for all the issues within it.

How many credits can a Protect a Cycle obtain?

One credit is awarded for:

Studios or 1 bedroom dwellings – storage for 1 cycle for every two dwellings
2 and 3 bedroom dwellings –- storage for 1 cycle per dwelling
4 bedrooms and above –- storage for 2 cycles per dwelling

and two credits are awarded for:

Studios or 1 bedroom dwellings – storage for 1 cycle per dwelling
2 and 3 bedroom dwellings – storage for 2 cycles per dwelling
4 bedrooms and above – storage for 4 cycles per dwelling

Within the CSH it states that it must be possible to remove each bike independently – within this criteria our Protect a Cycle can only store one cycle, so depending on the number of bedrooms within the house either one or two credits can be obtained. However, with its relatively low price, two Protect a Cycle units can be incorporated if necessary (Note: sizeable trade discounts are available for larger order quantities).

Does the Protect a Cycle fully comply with the criteria?

Yes, the Protect a Cycle was designed to comply with the requirements of the code.

Compliance

Locks:

Regarding the locks, the code states that, IF the unit has a secure entrance lock, it should conform with BS3621:2004 – the code also states that Secure Storage is defined as a Solid Structure with a Secure Entrance Lock OR Secure Fixings.

Our Protect a Cycle features Secure Fixings - a ground anchor which is designed to be bolted into a concrete base and is supplied with a Loss Prevention Board tested cable and lock (for securing the wheel and frame).

To clarify, the code reads:

“Secure Storage is defined as the provision of a fully enclosed solid structure with a secure entrance lock and/or secure fixings depending the situation and solution. In individual dwellings: – for solid enclosed structures: entrance lock or secure fixing(s).”

“Secure Fixing: A steel fixing set in concrete (or similar solid foundations/hardstanding) to manufacturer’s instructions, which allows both the wheel and frame to be locked securely.”

Minimum Size:

Although a minimum size for storage is stated, our product is regarded as a “Proprietary Product”, therefore space requirements are flexible within the code.
